Fredo the Unstronaut is the lively mascot of SaxaVord Spaceport, designed to inspire children aged 3-10 and champion the message of "Space for Good."
Designed in 2022, Fredo blends the adventurous spirit of a modern astronaut with the rich Viking heritage of Unst, Shetland—Britain's most northerly island and the historical landing point of Norse explorers. He symbolises the island's journey from its ancient past to its cutting-edge future as the hub of UK vertical space launch.
Named after SaxaVord’s Launch Pad 1, Fredo represents the innovative strides of the spaceport while also aiming to educate the younger generation about the benefits of space exploration. From creating new jobs to utilizing satellite data for environmental solutions, Fredo shows how UK space launches can positively impact our lives and the planet.
With a fun and engaging personality, Fredo brings SaxaVord’s educational initiatives to life, while promoting awareness of careers in the space industry. As SaxaVord prepares for its first test flight, Fredo will embody the excitement of this milestone, collaborating with organizations like the UK Space Agency to reach a broader audience.
