Why SaxaVord?

Fredo is on his very first Unstronaut mission! To become an Unstronaut, he needs to earn five mission patches, and today, he’s setting out to earn his first one: the "Why SaxaVord?" patch!

But why is SaxaVord Spaceport located all the way up in Shetland? To find out, Fredo goes straight to the source, speaking with Frank Strang, SaxaVord’s CEO, and Bryden Priest, the Community Projects Officer.

Together, they explore how space, weather, and safety make Shetland the perfect place for launching rockets! Plus, Fredo takes a closer look at other spaceports around the world—can viewers guess why they’re built where they are?

Safety

Fredo is back on another Unstronaut mission, and this time, it’s all about safety! Before rockets can launch from SaxaVord, the team creates exclusion zones—special areas that keep people, animals, and even boats and planes safe!

To earn his Safety Patch, Fredo calls Jimmy and Debbie to learn how they plan exclusion zones, decide where they go, and make sure everyone stays safe. But this isn’t just Fredo’s mission—it’s YOURS too!

Join in at home! Use a Map Radius Calculator to draw a 5 km exclusion zone around your house or school. What’s inside your safety zone? A park? Your school? Let us know what you find! Can Fredo complete his mission and earn his Safety Patch? And can YOU complete yours too?

Watch now, try the activity, and share your results in the comments! Safety first, Unstronauts!
